Simply, the process of creating and sharing digital artifacts for the intent of building relationships with consumer audiences is content marketing. Closely aligned with search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing is meant to build reputation by providing valuable information to prospective visitors in hopes of facilitating interactions that grow brand awareness, generate leads, or increase sales and traffic organically over time.

Traditionally, content is most often viewed in the form of words on a website, however, the explosion of social media now provide increased opportunities for brand and individuals to craft platform-specific messages directed at increasingly targeted audiences.

While modern methods of content marketing may include paid elements to increase awareness or take advantage of timely discussions in a digital forum, historically, this approach is not meant to elicit a direct response characteristic of pay-per-click-advertising (PPC).
